Isabel Allende to visit
Göteborg Book Fair
Isabel Allende, Latin America’s most well known and successful woman author, is to visit Göteborg Book Fair this year from 24th-27th September.
Her debut novel The House of the Spirits in 1982 brought Isabel Allende immediate success, and since then she has written over 15 novels, as well as books for children and young adults. Her books have sold more than 50 million copies worldwide and been translated into over 30 languages. Allende was born in 1942 and forced to flee her homeland of Chile after the military coup in 1973. She now lives in California.
At Göteborg Book Fair Isabel Allende will talk about her writings and her latest book, translated into Swedish, The Sum of Our Days. The book is in the form of a letter to her deceased daughter Paula. She describes daily and dramatic happenings in her large Latin American family in an unsentimental, candid and humorous fashion. The tribe of eccentric personalities would be as easily found in a TV series or a historical novel from the 1800s. At the same time sorrow for Paula is woven throughout the book.
The Göteborg Book Fair, in Sweden, is Scandinavia’s largest book fair. Every year 100,000 visitors attend during the four days of the Fair, which is both a trade fair and a book festival for the public. This year Spain and literature from Spanish speaking countries is in focus at the Book Fair. In addition, the Book Fair celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2009.
