Better smart packaging than intelligent packaging
Magnus Renman is head of strategic development at SCA Packaging – and would prefer to turn the focus from what everyone talks about today, printed electronics and intelligent packaging, to what he prefer to call smart packaging.
“You have to have a more holistic view of the packaging solution.”
“If you only focus on printed electronics, you miss important potential steps in development,” says Magnus. Many other, often underestimated, factors can create interactivity between consumer, package, and product. For instance, visual impressions – color and form – or perhaps something happens when you touch or pull on the package.

Personnel at Glomma Papp
Glomma Papp in Sarpsborg received an inquiry from 3M Sverige AB a while back. They wanted a new and different package for a welding mask from Speedglas.
The result – Glomma Papp and 3M Sverige AB received the World Star award in the World Packaging Organisation's global packaging contest.
“3M contacted our sales department and we accepted the assignment to create a package that would stand out from the others,” says Ulf Petter Lande, the man behind the winning concept.

What will the packaging of the future look like?
The INTELLIpack seminar at the Swedish Exhibition Center lifted a corner of the veil to let us take a peek "around the corner" to see what lies ahead – such as packages that talk to us, or give us instructions by video.
Most people agree that printed electronics will revolutionize the future. Many of the technical solutions are out there, but it will probably take a year or two before they are commercialized. Smart labels are already used in various designs and applications. These labels can provide large quantities of information, as well as inform about the product's quality.

There's plenty of new things going on in labelling – and much of it will be on display at Scanpack 2009.
Twenty-five companies in labelling have already booked places at the trade show. We've met two of them.
Rotakett in Helsingborg is a regular exhibitor at Scanpack. The company has participated every time since the early 1990s and feels the trade show is an extremely valuable opportunity.
